Laser Welding Technology for Diamond Circular Saw Blades
Apr 26 , 2023

Diamond circular saw blades usually work at high rotational speeds, and the heat generated during sawing can heat up the segments of the blade or even the steel body. Under the action of centrifugal force and cutting heat, traditional high frequency welded saw blades and sintered saw blades are prone to segmentation falling off, bringing safety hazards. The laser-welded diamond circular saw blades are popular among users because of their high welding strength, not easy to fall off segments, can be used for dry cutting and high safety in use. Therefore, the laser welding technology of diamond circular saw blade has been developed rapidly in recent years.

Laser welding is a process that uses a focused laser beam as an energy source to melt and fuse two metal parts together. Unlike other welding methods that use heat or pressure, laser welding does not require any filler material or contact between the parts. This makes laser welding more precise, efficient and cleaner than other welding methods. Laser welding technology for diamond circular saw blades began in the late 1980s. Norton in the United States first used a laser to cut circular saw blade substrates and gradually progressed to using laser welding of diamond saw blades. Later, some European tool manufacturers also adopted this new technology in diamond tools.

Laser welded diamond circular saw blades have the following advantages:

Heat resistance.

Generally speaking, in the welding process of diamond saw blade, if the solder requires high temperature, there will be diamond carbonization phenomenon, which leads to unstable cutting of saw blade. However, if the welding melting point of the solder is low, then the cost of the solder will rise. Laser welded saw blades use the method of fusing the diamond segment with the saw blade so that the blade and the diamond segment are not combined with the solder, which has little effect on the thermal stability of the diamond segment. This is one of the main advantages of laser welded saw blades. This advantage is most clearly demonstrated by the fact that laser welded saw blades can be used for dry cutting.

2 Weld strength.

Laser saw blades use a laser to raise the temperature of the weld point to that of a deep weld by irradiating the weld point with a laser beam. This temperature allows the base and part of the diamond segment of the saw blade to become directly gaseous and evaporate. Finally, protected by an inert gas, the weld area cools rapidly at room temperature, eventually forming a very small welded section. Due to this fast and efficient welding method, the weld strength is very high.

3 Thermal stability effect of the solder layer.

In the high frequency welding process, although the lower part of the diamond segment is welded, the thermal stability of the upper diamond segment is often affected because the high frequency welding cannot heat the individual weld layer, which will also have some effect on the structure of the upper diamond segment. Especially if the solder does not melt easily, the higher welding temperature will directly bring more uncertainty to the whole diamond segment. The laser welding process, on the other hand, only heats the welded section and has no effect on the other weld layers, so the benefit is that it makes the saw blade more stable.
