The discovery of Concrete Floor

The discovery of Concrete Floor
Nov 19 , 2020

In the autumn of 1958, experts from the Cultural Relics Department of Gansu Province carried out a cultural relic survey in Tianshui City of Qin'an. In the suburbs northeast of the county seat, archaeologists heard from local residents that they would often dig out broken pottery pieces or even complete pots here. Therefore, the experts carefully surveyed and excavated the area, they found several tombs and house ruins, and also unearthed some jade pieces, clay pots and a large number of animal remains.

After scientific appraisal, experts determined that this is a Neolithic site of human life which was about 4900-8120 years ago, and named it "Dadiwan Site". Afterwards, in order to better protect and study information of the site, experts carried out in-depth excavations about seven years. At the same time they unearthed "six firsts", which were the early Chinese crop; the first Chinese Purple-red painted pottery; the original prototype of Chinese characters which was thousands of years earlier than the Banpo site in Xi'an; the early Chinese paintings, black "graffiti" that exist independently on the stone walls; the early Chinese palace-style buildings, with an area of 420 square meters, were unique in the world; the early concrete floor which was paved with cement.

The experts were excavating a house site, and at the same time they cleared out all the lime soil that was shoveled out. When an expert was shoveling the lime soil, he found that the shovel could not dig, then he squatted down and examined it carefully. He used his hands to poke away the surrounding lime soil, and found that the bottom was not soil, but a gray concrete floor, and it was banging when I knocked it up with hands...

The experts at the scene were shocked, how could there be concrete? With full of doubts, the experts continued to clean up, and finally found a similar concrete floor of more than 130 square meters. In addition, experts took samples for scientific appraisal and found that the main component of concrete is "calcium silicate", which is similar to our current No. 100 cement mortar floor. Experts were all puzzled. How did the residents of Dadiwan learn to make concrete more than 5,000 years ago? Later, after in-depth research and discussion, the experts finally solved the mystery.

Through sampling and analysis of these concrete floors, the experts found that the composition was very uneven, not only had powdered stone ash, but also stones of different sizes, and even a lot of soil ash mixed in it. Therefore, experts speculated that where the ancients made or polished stone tools, there must be a lot of lime and small stones, and then when it rained, the lime, small stones and soil were mixed together. After a while later, the lime and stones in these places formed hard concrete. Therefore, people were inspired by it and started to build houses with concrete consciously. However, because of the limited level of productivity at that time, grinding lime and rocking stones required a lot of labor input. Therefore, only people with certain status and power at that time were able to lay concrete. Perhaps the concrete floor was still a symbol of identity and status.

In modern society, concrete has become one of the most important building materials, and concrete floors are widely used in commercial and industrial fields. With the help of suitable diamond tools, the concrete floor can have a strong sense of design, and any pattern can be made on the surface of the concrete floor. TransGrind Tools offers many different kinds of diamond tools for concrete floor grinding and polishing. TransGrind Polishing Systems provides a large selection of diamond tooling for specific applications.
