How to Polish Terrazzo by Hand Grinder
Jun 03 , 2024

Before you begin polishing terrazzo, make sure you have all the required materials and equipment handy. You will need a hand grinder with diamond polishing pads of various grits, a wet or dry vacuum, protective gear(safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask), and a clean mop or sponge. Clear the area of any furniture or debris, and thoroughly sweep or vacuum the floor to remove loose dirt and dust.

Attach the coarse-grit terrazzo floor polishing pads to your hand grinder. Dip the pad in the water to wet it, as water helps reduce heat and lubricates the surface. Begin grinding the terrazzo floor in a circular motion, applying even pressure. Keep the grinder at a slight angle to prevent creating deep grooves. Work small sections at a time, overlapping your passes to ensure consistent polishing. Continue until the entire floor has been treated with the coarse-grit pad.

Once you have completed the initial grinding with the coarse-grit pad, it’s time to move on to finer-grit pads. Replace the coarse pad with a medium-grit one and repeat the grinding process using the same motion. As you progress through the grits, you will notice the surface becoming smoother and more refined. Make sure to clean the area with a wet or dry vacuum after each pass to remove the slurry and assess your progress.

To achieve a high-gloss finish on your terrazzo floor, continue switching to finer-grit resin polishing pads. Move from medium-grit to finer-grit and finally to very fine-grit pads. Polish the surface with each pad, making sure to clean the area thoroughly after each pass. As you progress through the final grits, the terrazzo will become increasingly shiny and reflective. Take your time and pay attention to any areas that may require additional attention.

Once you have obtained the desired level of shine, it’s important to clean the surface thoroughly to remove any remaining residue. Use a clean mop or sponge with water to wipe away the slurry and debris. Allow the floor to dry completely before applying a terrazzo sealer, which will protect the surface and enhance its appearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific sealer you choose, ensuring you apply it evenly and according to the recommended drying time.

Polishing terrazzo by hand grinder is an effective way to restore its beauty and prolong its lifespan. Remember to prioritize safety by wearing protective gear and thoroughly cleaning the area before and after polishing. With patience and proper technique, your terrazzo floor will regain its stunning appearance and become the centrepiece of your space once again.
